Google Brings New Voice Typing Interface On Gboard For Android Users

Android users now have a smarter, more flexible way to type using voice input, thanks to a recent update to Gboard. The new feature—currently rolling out to Pixel devices and select Samsung Galaxy phones—introduces a dedicated voice typing mode, separating it from the traditional keyboard interface.
A New Way to Access Voice Typing
Previously, users could tap the microphone icon on Gboard and dictate text while the keyboard stayed on-screen, allowing for small edits mid-dictation. The latest update changes this approach. Now, when users activate voice typing, the keyboard disappears and is replaced by a minimal floating voice control bar, giving more screen space to view and interact with content.
How To Activate On Gboard
This new mode offers several handy tools designed to enhance voice input:
Clipboard Access: Easily paste saved content by selecting “Show clipboard"
Translation Tool: Use “Show Translate" to instantly translate and insert text
Emoji Support: Tap “Show emoji menu" or say the emoji name (e.g., “smiling face") to add emojis
Custom Toolbar Layouts: Switch to a vertical toolbar for better usability during multitasking
Voice Commands for Hands-Free Typing
Voice typing is now more powerful, offering intuitive commands to manage input without touching the screen. After enabling the microphone, users can view a list of supported voice commands by selecting “Show voice commands." These include:
“Send" – to submit a message.
“Stop" – to end dictation.
“Delete" or “Clear" – to erase text.
“Next" and “Previous" – to navigate between text fields on forms
Spell Mode – users can spell words aloud for clarity.
This enhanced voice typing tool isn’t just limited to texting or chatting. It can fill out online forms, navigate apps and insert emojis—all by voice. The expanded control makes it a practical alternative for those moments when typing by hand isn’t convenient, such as while multitasking or on the go.
Although some users may still prefer traditional typing, Gboard’s voice-first interface offers a compelling, hands-free solution for a wide range of tasks. It reflects a growing trend in mobile tech – prioritising accessibility, speed and user convenience.
