WhatsApp Will Now Show You Ads In Status And Channels: What Does This Mean?

WhatsApp is finally getting ads and after all these years of denial, Meta has managed to introduce the paid model to the messaging app in 2025. WhatsApp ads will be plastered over Status updates that are similar to Stories on Instagram and the ads will show in the same way. But WhatsApp also sees a huge potential in Channels which means the ads will be part of its future growth strategy at Meta.
The concerns don’t end there. Meta says some of your WhatsApp data will be used to offer personalised ads (never the best thing to read) for its users.
WhatsApp Ads Were Inevitable
Meta (Facebook back then) always had eyes on WhatsApp and its large daily user base to monetise its business. Instagram and Facebook have offered them for many years, and now it is time for WhatsApp to dunk into the sinkhole. WhatsApp is offering ads for channel subscriptions, promoted channels and Status updates. The messaging app will have sponsored labels over the channels that pay to increase its visibility across the users.
Status updates have become popular among WhatsApp users and the platform clearly sees a way out to push ads and keep its user base satisfied.
You’ll be seeing the ads between the updates from your friends or other contacts. WhatsApp says ads will not come where your personal chats are located but going by the earlier promises and claims made by Meta, we cannot discount that changing in the near future.
WhatsApp also assures that it will never sell/share your phone number to advertisers and your chats or calls will never become part of its exercise to push personalised ads.
Meta has never given us strong reasons to vouch for its tall claims and with WhatsApp ads you see history repeat itself once again. It is going to use data like country, language to change the dynamics of its platform and it is now up to the people to decide if their favourite messaging app is worth the hassle anymore or moving to other, safer pastures is the best way out.
