Scammers Can Hijack Your SIM In Minutes, Govt Issues Urgent Warning

At a time when digital fraud is becoming increasingly sophisticated, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a nationwide alert, warning mobile users about a surge in SIM swap scams and fraudulent calls.

DoT Issues Warning To Mobile Users

The DoT has advised millions of mobile users across India to remain vigilant against fraudsters impersonating SIM service representatives. This official warning was shared via DoT’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

Users are urged to report any suspicious calls or messages immediately.

What Is SIM Swap Fraud?

One scam highlighted in the advisory is SIM swap fraud. In recent weeks, many users have reported unsolicited calls attempting to mislead them into closing their SIM cards. DoT has clarified that it, along with TRAI and all telecom companies, never initiates such calls.

Users are warned not to respond to any messages or calls requesting KYC details or containing suspicious links.

How Do Cyber Criminals Exploit SIM Swaps?

Cybercriminals can hijack users’ mobile numbers by fraudulently acquiring a new SIM card using social engineering tactics. Once they gain access to the number, they intercept one-time passwords (OTPs) used in two-factor authentication for banking and online accounts, allowing them to steal funds or compromise digital identities.

To strengthen user protection, DoT has introduced stricter SIM card regulations. Biometric verification is now mandatory for new SIM issuance, and SMS services are disabled for 24 hours after a new SIM is activated. This delay prevents criminals from immediately accessing OTPs if a SIM swap occurs.

How To Stay Safe From This Scam

DoT stresses the importance of personal vigilance.
